More than tracking: A tool for community building
The Austrian Sailing Federation (ASF) doesn't use Waterspeed just to track sessions. They use it to keep their entire community moving — from club sailors exploring new disciplines to national team athletes competing on data as hard as they compete on the water.
From one challenge to a year-round habit
This is already their fourth challenge. And with each one, something has shifted. People no longer need to be told how it works — they're already familiar, already waiting. The barrier to join has dropped with every edition, and the community that's formed around the challenge keeps growing stronger.

Consistency over speed
This time, the ASF made a deliberate choice: twelve months, not a season. The goal wasn't to reward the fastest riders or the most active week. It was to find out who shows up consistently across the whole year — and make sure that dedication gets recognised.
Not just with prizes, but with visibility. The federation actively showcases the achievements of its most committed members, highlighting their progress and their commitment to the sport.
A leaderboard that tells the story
The leaderboard makes that dedication impossible to ignore. Ranked by total accumulated distance, it turns a full year of sailing into something visible, measurable, and shared.
Some members have already logged hundreds of kilometres, with the leading riders passing major milestones across the year. But the real story is not only who sits at the top. It is the consistency behind every session, every new spot, and every kilometre added over time.
These aren't just numbers. They represent commitment, progress, and a community that keeps showing up.
How data is motivating national team athletes
The national team is probably the most striking example of what the challenge can do.
At the start, the ASF had to convince some of their athletes to use the app and track their sessions. Now, those same athletes are constantly competing with each other — inside the challenge and outside of it.
They use the data to learn and improve, and the challenge has pushed them to explore further. In their free time, they've been picking up pump foiling and wing foiling, drawn by the same curiosity and motivation the challenge sparked.
Opening the door to new riders and new disciplines
Beyond activating existing members, the challenge has also become a gateway for people who had no prior connection to the ASF at all.
Riders discover the federation through the challenge, join the community, and often stay. For a federation thinking seriously about where sailing is headed, that kind of reach matters.
New disciplines are emerging, the sport is evolving, and the challenge creates a natural entry point for riders who might never have found their way in through a traditional route.
