Best sailing apps for Apple Watch, compared

Waterspeed, SailingWatch, Pathfinder Sailing, Race Master and WindsportTracker compared for sailing on Apple Watch: race timer, start line, live tactics, analysis afterwards and price model.

By the Waterspeed team

Single-handed dinghy sailor in a race

If you want a pinged start line and live tactics on the wrist, SailingWatch and Pathfinder Sailing are built around the race start. If you want a race countdown plus detailed analysis afterwards (every tack, best speeds, VMG) and to bring in Garmin or Vakaros data too, Waterspeed covers more. Race Master is a timer first. WindsportTracker suits sailors who also windsurf or wing and want manoeuvre stats.

Compared as of October 2026 from each app’s US App Store page and, for Waterspeed, its help centre. We make Waterspeed; we have tried to describe the others fairly. If something is out of date, tell us at support@waterspeedapp.com.

Waterspeed

Waterspeed records sailing on iPhone or Apple Watch, or syncs automatically from Garmin, Coros and Suunto. Vakaros files import through the web app. The race countdown (Pro) sounds and vibrates at 4 minutes, 1 minute, 30 seconds and for the last 10 seconds. Sync + and Sync − snap it to the committee’s signals, and on Apple Watch Ultra the Action button starts the countdown and then syncs it down. Recording starts automatically at zero.

After the session you see each tack and gybe with its angle, entry and exit speed, and whether it was missed, plus best speeds and a replay. Ultra adds VMG by leg, true wind angle, port and starboard comparison, and a polar chart built from your own track. Live tracking from the watch lets people ashore follow you. The same app covers windsurf, wing, kite, SUP and kayak.

Pinging a start line and seeing laylines on the wrist are not among Waterspeed’s listed features.

SailingWatch

SailingWatch is a race companion for dinghies, keelboats and yachts on iPhone and Apple Watch. It has a large countdown that syncs to the committee boat in one tap, and a start line you set by pinging the pin and committee-boat ends, with line bias and live distance to the line. It also shows tack angles with a lifted/headed call, plus a 6-hour wind forecast strip. Sessions are recorded on a map with replay, GPX export and Strava upload. The download is free, and the App Store lists monthly and annual in-app subscriptions.

Tack-by-tack analysis afterwards and data from another device are not listed.

Pathfinder Sailing

Pathfinder Sailing is built for sailboat racing on iPhone and Apple Watch. It has a race timer and start screens with distance below the line and the speed you need to start. The Plus plan adds polar targets, wind-shift trends and sailing instrument integration. NOAA current data is on all plans. Race replay compares your track with other boats in your fleet, and race logs export as JSON or Expedition files. A monthly or annual subscription is needed after a 14-day free trial.

It is a poor fit if you don’t race or don’t want a subscription.

Race Master Sail Timer

Race Master is a timer first. You press “Gun” when you hear a signal, adjust afterwards whether it was the 5, 4 or 1 minute warning, and jump back if it was a false alarm. It defaults to the 5-4-1-0 sequence and handles any countdown up to 30 minutes. With GPS on it shows speed and course over ground, a GPS distance to the line, and a history of course and speed to spot wind shifts. It is free to download, with in-app subscriptions. The last update was in July 2025.

Analysis of your sailing afterwards is not listed.

WindsportTracker

WindsportTracker is a GPS logbook for wingfoil, windsurf, kite, sailing and more. It detects tacks and jibes automatically, with a success rate on port and starboard, and records speed over 2 s, 5 s, 10 s, 500 m and 1 nautical mile plus planing or flying time. It imports GPX, FIT, TCX and SBP files from Garmin, Suunto, Polar and Coros. There is a 27-day free trial.

If you mainly race and want start tools, look elsewhere.

How do I choose?

  1. Starts matter most? SailingWatch or Pathfinder Sailing.
  2. Want to learn from every session, not only the start? Waterspeed.
  3. Also sail with a Garmin or Vakaros? Waterspeed syncs Garmin and imports Vakaros; WindsportTracker imports Garmin files.
  4. Just a timer? Race Master.
