Atins kitesurf guide: the river mouth lagoon and wind season
Kite in Atins means flat, warm lagoon water at a river mouth on the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses. The wind is almost guaranteed from July to mid-January, so December is the month to go.

Atins is a good kitesurf spot in December, but less reliable in January and February. IKSURFMAG says the wind is almost guaranteed from July to mid-January, blowing 15 to 30 knots over a flat lagoon at the river mouth. Atins kitesurf suits beginners through to freestyle riders, and SUP works on the same flat water.
Facts as of November 2026, from the sources listed at the end of this page.
Where do you kite in Atins?
The main spot is the river mouth. IKSURFMAG describes flat, warm lagoon water with shifting sandbanks, and ocean chop and waves beyond it. There is no shorebreak, which makes launching and landing easier.
The wind is constant and cross-onshore from the right. If you are learning, stay on the flat water inside; the chop and waves outside are there when you want them.
How windy is Atins from December to February?
| Month | Days with 4 Bft (about 12 knots) or more | Average wind |
|---|---|---|
| December | 29 | 13 knots |
| January | 25 | 11 knots |
| February | 19 | 9 knots |
These are Kite Jungle’s figures. IKSURFMAG lists July to December as the windiest months, so December is the strongest of the three.
Is February still windy?
Less so. The season IKSURFMAG describes ends in mid-January, and Kite Jungle’s count falls from 29 windy days in December to 19 in February, with an average of 9 knots. If you can choose, go in December. In February, bring your biggest kite and plan some days off the water.
Do the sandbanks move?
Yes. IKSURFMAG calls them shifting, so the shallow areas at the river mouth are not in the same place every season. Walk or ask about the current layout before your first session, especially at low tide.
How do you get there?
Atins sits on the edge of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, which is protected. Only licensed 4x4 vehicles may enter, and IKSURFMAG warns that transfer schedules can leave you waiting in Barreirinhas. Fly to São Luís (SLZ) or Parnaíba (PHB); IKSURFMAG puts each about 5 hours away by car.
Parnaíba is also the nearest airport for Barra Grande, so the two are easy to combine. For more about riding flat lagoons, see the kitesurf and SUP pages, where Waterspeed shows what it records on the water.
