Best Garmin watch for sailing: quatix 8 or fēnix?

quatix 8, quatix 8 Pro or fēnix 9: which Garmin to wear for sailing and dinghy racing. The sailing tools they share, what only the quatix adds, and how to analyse your sessions afterwards.

For racing, the quatix 8 and the fēnix have the same sailing tools: Sail and Sail Race activities, a regatta timer with a GPS start line, and tack assist. The quatix 8 adds a link to Garmin boat electronics (chartplotter data, autopilot and stereo control), so it is worth it if your boat has Garmin electronics. If you race dinghies or foilers without them, a fēnix does the same job on the water.

Lineup and features as of October 2026, checked against Garmin’s owner’s manuals. Garmin changes models and prices often; check garmin.com before buying.

Which Garmin watches are current for sailing?

As of October 2026, Garmin’s sailing-capable flagships are:

  • quatix 8: Garmin’s marine watch, built on the fēnix 8 platform, in 47 mm and 51 mm.
  • quatix 8 Pro: announced in January 2026; a 47 mm quatix 8 with built-in inReach satellite and LTE connectivity for messaging, calls, LiveTrack and SOS (needs a subscription).
  • fēnix 9 and fēnix 9 Pro: announced on 25 August 2026, in 43, 47 and 51 mm. The Pro adds satellite and LTE connectivity.

The fēnix 8 manual lists the same sailing features. A fēnix 8 you already own, or find on sale, does the same job on the racecourse.

What sailing features do quatix and fēnix share?

Feature What it does
Sail, Sail Race and Sail Expedition activities Record the session under Activities > Water Sports
Regatta timer Sync it with the official countdown; it alerts you every minute as the start approaches. Set a fixed countdown or a GPS start time within the next 24 hours
Start line and time to burn Mark the port and starboard ends as you sail past them; the watch then shows whether you will reach the line before, after or at the start, and the distance to the line
Tack assist Shows whether a wind shift lifts or heads you upwind. Calibrate it on one or both tacks; it works from GPS course over ground and, as Garmin notes, does not account for current or tide
Tides and anchor alarm Tide height and next high and low for a saved station; an alarm when the boat drifts beyond a radius you set

These are in the quatix 8, fēnix 8 and fēnix 9 owner’s manuals. Garmin calls the time-to-start figure “time to burn”: negative means you will be late to the line, positive means early.

quatix 8 or fēnix: what does the quatix add?

The quatix 8 manual has boat apps that are missing from the fēnix 8 manual:

quatix 8 fēnix 8 / fēnix 9
Sail, Sail Race, regatta timer, start line, tack assist Yes Yes
Tides, anchor alarm Yes Yes
Boat Data: data fields streamed from a paired Garmin chartplotter (up to six pages of three fields) Yes No
MFD Remote: use the watch as a remote for a Garmin chartplotter Yes No
Autopilot control Yes No
Boat Command: voice commands to the chartplotter Yes No
Garmin Audio: control a Fusion stereo Yes No
Pick it if Your boat has Garmin electronics, or you cruise and want the watch to talk to the boat You race dinghies or foilers, or sail as one sport among many

On top of that, the quatix 8 Pro has inReach satellite and LTE messaging and SOS. That matters most if you sail offshore or alone.

How do I analyse a sailing session from my Garmin?

The watch records the track, and you analyse it afterwards. Connect your Garmin account to Waterspeed and every activity recorded as a water sport, including Garmin’s own Sail and Sail Race, syncs automatically from Garmin Connect. Syncing is free. In Waterspeed you see:

  • each tack and gybe with its angle, entry and exit speed, and whether it counted as missed (tacks and gybes);
  • best speeds and a replay of the session;
  • with Ultra, VMG, true wind angle, upwind and downwind legs and a polar chart from your own track (what is VMG?).

Waterspeed also has its own app for Garmin watches in the Connect IQ Store. For setup, see Waterspeed for Garmin.

FAQ

Do I need a quatix to sail with a Garmin? No. The Sail and Sail Race activities, regatta timer, start line and tack assist are also on the fēnix 8 and fēnix 9. The quatix adds the link to Garmin boat electronics.

Can a Garmin count my tacks? On the water, tack assist tells you whether you are lifted or headed. For a list of every tack and gybe afterwards, with speed in and out of each, sync the activity to Waterspeed.

Is Apple Watch an alternative? Yes. Apple Watch Ultra with Waterspeed records sailing on its own, with a race countdown (Pro) and live tracking from the watch. The trade-offs are in Apple Watch or Garmin for sailing. For other sports, see best watches for watersports.

Which race timer is easiest to use? That depends more on resync and alerts than on the watch. See race timers compared.
