Pointe Magnin is a flat stretch of water with what New Caledonia Tourism calls “regular offshore winds”. You must be able to ride upwind on your own, because you can drift offshore quickly.
Anse Vata to Ouen Toro has flat water inside the barrier reef, with easy access and reliable wind, according to Kite Jungle.
Îlot Maître is where schools hold their introductory sessions. Get there by water taxi, or kite across from the Le Méridien beach once you can ride.
Which way does the wind blow?
Mainly from the south-east and east, according to New Caledonia Tourism. Windfinder’s La Tontouta International Airport station, about 40 km away, averages 8.3 knots in December, 8.4 in January and 7.8 in February, from the south-south-east. The Nouméa Magenta Airport station averages 5.5 knots from the east in each of those months. Both are whole-day averages over all directions.
What are the rules on the water?
An arrêté of the Government of New Caledonia (2025-575/GNC, 2 April 2025) creates a zone on the Anse Vata water area reserved for sport and recreational water activities. Swimming and mooring are banned in it, and so are registered craft other than light sailing craft and human-powered craft. In zone B of Baie des Citrons, non-motorised registered craft other than human-powered ones are banned.
The arrêté does not mention kites by name, and the zone limits are set in a separate municipal arrêté. Check with a local school where you may launch and ride.
What should you watch out for?
- Cyclones. Most occur between February and April. During a cyclone alert, water sports are not recommended and are sometimes forbidden.
- Offshore drift at Pointe Magnin.
- Îlot Goéland is closed every year from 1 October to 31 March so terns can nest. Do not land there.
New Caledonia Tourism says windsurfing and kitesurfing are possible all year round, so you can also come outside cyclone season, when the trade wind is lighter.
How do you get there?
International flights land at La Tontouta International Airport (NOU), about 40 km from Nouméa. Nouméa Magenta, the domestic airport, is about 6 km away.
