Lancelin is one of the best-known kitesurf and windsurf spots in Western Australia for the December to February window. IKSURFMAG says the sea breeze blows pretty much every day from the end of November until the beginning of March, and it is windier than Perth, so riders go a kite size smaller. There is flat water in the lagoon for learning and left-hand reef waves for experienced riders.

How does the wind work at Lancelin?

Mornings are offshore. Around midday the sea breeze comes in and swings cross-onshore from the left, and it stays for the afternoon. IKSURFMAG lists November to March as the windiest months.

Windfinder’s Lancelin station averages about 10 knots from the south in December, January and February, measured over the whole day. That is lower than the guides describe for the afternoon sessions, so read it as a daily mean that includes the mornings and nights, not as session wind.

Where can you kitesurf in Lancelin?

  • The Lagoon has flat water inside the reef, good for learning.
  • Back Beach has no reef, just a shorebreak, and suits learners.
  • Main Break is a left-hand reef wave for experienced wave riders.
  • South Passage is another left-hand reef wave, for experienced riders only. There are rocks and Lancelin Island nearby.

Windsurfers share the beach, and there is a windsurfing school.

What are the rules on the beach?

IKSURFMAG asks kiters to launch up towards the point, away from the windsurfing school and the swimming area, and to respect windsurfers on the water.

What should you watch out for?

  • The reef is shallow at low tide. Check the tide before riding over it.
  • South Passage has rocks and the island close by, so a fall there can push you onto hard ground quickly.
  • The sand is soft. If you drive onto the beach, make sure your vehicle can handle it.

How do you get there?

Fly into Perth Airport (PER). Lancelin is about 1.5 hours north by car. From Perth you can also ride closer to the city at Perth or south at Safety Bay. Further north, Geraldton and Coronation Beach have a similar summer sea breeze. More on the sports: kitesurf, windsurf and surf.
