Perth in summer: the Fremantle Doctor, kitesurf spots and surfski downwind runs

The Fremantle Doctor, a south-westerly sea breeze, blows most summer afternoons and is strongest in December and January. It powers kitesurf at Leighton and Pinnaroo Point and the surfski downwind runs along the coast.

Perth is one of the most reliable summer wind spots in the southern hemisphere. The Fremantle Doctor, a south-westerly sea breeze, arrives most afternoons between 10 am and 3 pm and often blows 15 to 20 knots near the coast. It is strongest in December and January and eases in February and March.

Facts as of November 2026, from the sources listed at the end of this page.

What is the Fremantle Doctor?

It is the sea breeze that cools Perth on summer afternoons. It comes in from the west-south-west, peaks from the south-west or south-south-west, and swings to the south by early evening. Near the coast it often reaches 28 to 37 km/h, about 15 to 20 knots.

Windfinder’s Swanbourne station, on the coast between Cottesloe and City Beach, puts the average wind at about 11 knots from the south-south-west to south in December and January, measured over the whole day. The afternoons, when the Doctor is in, are windier than that average.

Where can you kitesurf in Perth?

  • Leighton Beach, north of Fremantle: kite schools teach beginners here.
  • Pinnaroo Point, in the northern suburbs: deep water and side-shore wind. Destination Perth calls it a spot for intermediate and expert riders; beginners should not ride it alone until they are independent.
  • The City of Joondalup coast has a designated kitesurfing area. Kitesurfing is banned within 200 m of shore at Mullaloo and Sorrento, marked by buoys and beach signs.
  • Woodman Point, south of Fremantle: the City of Cockburn banned kitesurfing there in 2013 and consulted on an exclusion zone in 2021 to protect a fairy tern nesting site. Check the current rules before you ride.

For more space and stronger wind, many Perth riders drive south to Safety Bay or north to Lancelin.

Which surfski downwind runs does the Doctor give?

The south-westerly pushes paddlers north along the coast, so the classic runs finish at Sorrento or City Beach:

Run Start Finish Distance
Dutchies Run Cottesloe Sorrento 20 km
Drummer’s Run Sand Tracks Beach, Fremantle City Beach 11 km
Gage Roads Run Sand Tracks Beach Sorrento about 26 km
Trigg Run Trigg Sorrento 6.5 km

The Doctor race, from Rottnest Island to Sorrento (27 km), runs in November, just before the summer window. For a flat-water option, the 12 km Swan River run goes from the Swan Yacht Club to Apex Reserve. The surfski wiki suggests local clubs as the place to start.

Is Perth good for sailing in summer?

Yes. The same afternoon breeze made Gage Roads, off Fremantle, the venue of the 1987 America’s Cup, sailed from late January to mid-February.

What should you watch out for?

  • Sorrento Beach has a shark siren alert system, and Drummer’s Run follows the shark-detection drumline.
  • Woodies Run passes naval property.
  • The Doctor race requires a personal locator beacon, a sensible choice on any long downwind run.
  • Stay out of the kite exclusion zones at Mullaloo, Sorrento and, if the ban still applies, Woodman Point.
